We don’t have any private parking at St Valery unfortunately. On street parking is available throughout the village and is free of charge and mainly unrestricted. A very small section of about 5 spaces on the high street (near Scott’s of Alnmouth delicatessen) is time limited to 2 hours only, but everywhere else is restriction free.
The village is now one way, so if you don’t find parking space immediately, or after a couple of times round the village, you might find it easier to stop opposite, or just after the house on the double yellow lines to unload and get checked in before parking the car.
Alnmouth does get busy, particularly in the late afternoon as people return to their homes, holiday lets and hotels etc, but from experience, spaces do actually come up pretty frequently so don’t worry too much as you will always get parked, albeit maybe a few minutes’ walk away.
Check in at St Valery is between 4pm and 6pm. Because we’re a small B&B rather than an hotel, we don’t have a manned check-in desk or reception and so whilst it may be possible to arrive later than this, please just check with us quickly before making a booking – it may be that there is something arranged on that date which would prevent a later check in for example. Checking in later than 9pm is unfortunately not possible.
You’re more than welcome to arrive earlier, we can’t guarantee your room will be ready, but you can leave your bags and we can let you know just as soon as your room is ready.
If you arrive early and there’s no answer at the door, please feel free to call or message 07920 238345 and let us know you’re here – we’re most likely doing other jobs but we’ll not be far.
Check out is ideally by 11am but can be pushed to 12 noon if you need a bit of extra time. If you’re planning on staying locally on the day of departure or waiting for a late train, you’re very welcome to leave bags with us, and to make use of the communal areas until it’s time to leave.
We have recently altered our booking terms and conditions to allow a much greater degree of flexibility and to reflect the situation and uncertainty arising as a result of Covid-19. We totally understand that plans may need to change and so if you do find you need to modify or cancel your booking, you can do so free of charge up to 7 days before your arrival. If you need to cancel within 7 days of arrival the cost of the first night only will be due.
You can manage your booking including adding requests, paying the balance or making changes/cancellations online at: Manage my booking.
We’re sure you can understand that as a small B&B with only 4 rooms, any cancellations can represent a significant loss of revenue for us and so please do give as much notice as possible if you do need to cancel to allow us time to hopefully rebook the room.
We’re just 3.5hrs from London King’s Cross by train, and under an hour from Edinburgh on the East Coast Line. It is recommended you pre-book taxis if you’re arriving by train as it’s a small station and most of the taxis you might see on arriving will be booked. We recommend using Knights for train station pick ups as they are based in the village and don’t charge additional to come over from Alnwick – that said, you should still expect to pay about £7 for the very short 1 mile journey . Alternatively it’ll take about 15-20 minutes to walk into the centre of Alnmouth from the train station .
A few numbers of local firms are Knights Taxis – 07760 751667; AA Taxis – 01665 606060; Gary’s Taxis – 07544 599030; Hadston Taxis – 01670 760698.
The village is served by the X18 bus operated by Arriva travelling towards Newcastle to the south and Berwick to the North. There is also the 418 service operated by Travelsure once per day covering Alnwick to Belford (including Alnmouth) via the coast. Whilst it might take longer than by car, you can reach most of the coastal villages such as Craster, Beadnell and Bamburgh by bus.
Why not treat someone to a stay at St Valery that they can redeem for whatever dates are suitable for them? Our gift vouchers are available in a variety of monetary values, are valid for 2 years and can be purchased on our website here.
We have one room (St Benedict) located on the ground floor and is therefore the most suitable for anyone with mobility issues.
St Aidan and St Cuthbert are on the first floor up one flight of stairs whilst St Bede is on the second floor and the least suitable for guests with mobility issues.
Breakfast at St Valery is a relaxed affair and is served between 8.30am and 10am.
Our normal breakfast service consists of a self-selection breakfast buffet of cereals, fruits, yoghurt and juice followed by a selection of freshly cooked dishes prepared to order. We don’t like pre-ordering, so we don’t see why we should ask you to do so, but this does mean that dishes don’t appear immediately. If you’re in a rush and don’t really want to wait, then let us know the day before what you’d like preparing and it’ll save you a bit of time.
For those needing to be up and away early, we’re sometimes asked if it’s possible to have breakfast earlier than the normal 8.30am start. Please understand that a certain amount of noise is unavoidable during the preparation and serving of breakfast and so for the benefit of all our guests staying who may not want to be woken too early whilst on holiday, this is not something we can do. Should all guests staying want an early breakfast, such as with a group booking, we’re happy to provide breakfast at any time to suit.
During the ongoing Covid-19 situation, steps will/be taken to reduce associated risks involved with our breakfast service. During this time, our breakfast buffet will be removed and this will be plated to order directly from our kitchen. We may also ask for pre-orders of ‘hot food’ due to a reduction in the number of staff. We hope you can understand that any changes to our normal service are to minimise risk and to adhere better to social distancing guidelines. Please feel free to speak to us either before your stay or during if you have any concerns or comments at all.
For a small village, Alnmouth is fortunate to have a good selection of places to eat and so hopefully you’ll find something to tickle your taste buds. Many of the restaurants adjust their opening times according to the time of year and day of the week and we’re very happy to steer you in the right direction with honest recommendations so please do ask. Alnmouth is very small and so all restaurants are within a minutes’ walk away.
We have never offered dinner service however another change currently being looked at resulting from Covid-19 and restrictions placed on restaurants and pubs, is the possibility of needing to provide evening meals for guests. We will update the Food & Drink section of the website once the situation becomes clear or for details please contact us directly for more information.
We don’t vary our per night rates between high and low seasons or between days or the week as it’s something we know can be frustrating and we want our pricing to be clear and easy to understand. We do however offer promotions in the low season such as our brilliant Night on the House offer and in summer, we’ll typically offer additional discounts based on the length of stay. During high season or key dates, we may limit stays to a 2 night minimum – if the website is showing availability for a single night yet will not allow you to book, please give us a call to check as it may well be possible to book just the 1 night.
For more information on any active promotions please visit the offers section of the website here.
Alnmouth is easy to find, just a few miles from Alnwick off the A1 – take the exit for Alnwick and then follow signs for Ashington and Alnmouth (A1068).
Cross over the bridge at the entrance to the village and turn right at the war memorial. Turn left up The Wynd and follow the road along the golf course and you’ll approach the village from the bottom of Northumberland Street. Continue up the main street away from the sea – you’ll pass the Red Lion Inn on your left and the church on your right, St Valery is located on the left hand side, just after the Whittling House (formerly the Saddle Grill) but before The Sun Inn which is painted bright yellow so hard to miss!
Please let us know in advance of your stay of any allergies we need to be aware of.
- For guests requiring gluten free we can typically provide GF bread and granola at breakfast and GF biscuits in your room for tea & coffee
- For guests suffering from feather allergies, none of our bedding contains feathers so you shouldn’t any problems
- We have fresh flowers in the communal areas and bedrooms – please let us know of any particular flower allergy such as lilies.
We will always do our best to fulfil any special requests you may have such as bouquets of flowers, or a particular bottle of champagne to be ready and waiting for you, do feel free to ask, but please note we cannot always guarantee this (much as we’d like to!)
